Lichtburg

Great cinema for sophisticated music

The red carpet regularly rolls out the film glamour straight onto the Kettwiger Straße. Premieres from James Bond to the German art house cinema, from Wender’s “Pina Bausch” to Dresen’s “Gundermann” have been glamorously celebrated here. Film fans usually take their last drink at the Filmbar, which also has a magnetic effect on jazz fans: It is used as a venue for the best jazz sessions in the Ruhr Area every Thursday from 9 pm. Essen’s Lichtburg with its 1,200 red velvet seats, however, is not only considered legendary as a premiere cinema, but also infamous for extraordinary concerts in a magnificent ambience. Sometimes, both worlds even collide – as was the case with Wim Wender’s musical film “Viel passiert”(=A lot is happening) about BAP, which was not only filmed here but also used to celebrate the premiere. Extraordinary concerts were hosted here, among others by greats like Sigur Ros, Ex- Velvet Underground John Cale and Fury in the Slaughterhouse. The deep film chairs let the guests enjoy the acoustic concerts to an exceptional high degree!
