Siegen-Wittgenstein

Wild bison and idyllic timber-framed towns

Excellent hiking trails and bison that have been released into the wild, art in nature and impressive castles and fortresses – the Siegen-Wittgenstein region is full of surprises.

Unique experiences in nature

The classic hiking trail in the Siegen-Wittgenstein region is the Rothaarsteig, which runs from Sauerland to Westerwald. The themed routes “Hiking highlights left and right of the Rothaarsteig” offer one-day hikes that are packed with experiences. Visitors to the region can expect an unusual encounter on the WaldSkulpturenWeg (Forest Sculpture Trail), which is unique throughout Germany: Between Bad Berleburg and Schmallenberg in the neighbouring Hochsauerlandkreis, renowned artists have left clearly visible signs in the heart of nature.

The Wittgenstein forests offer visitors an experience of nature that is quite special: The only bison living in the wild in Western Europe live here. At Wisent-Welt (bison world) on the Rothaarsteig, where a small herd of bison roam free on a 20 hectare site that has been left to nature, visitors can get very close to the largest land mammals on the continent.

Idyllic timber-framed towns

There is plenty worth seeing not only in the extensive forests but also in the many historic town centres: the centre of the idyllic timber-framed town of Freudenberg is a walk-in treasure trove as an international architectural monument. The historical town centres of Bad Berleburg, Bad Laasphe, Hilchenbach and Siegen also invite you to take a walk around, with their castles and fortresses.
